Talisker Port Ruighe is a blend of malts matured in American oak and European oak refill casks with spirit that has been filled into specially conditioned deeply charred casks. The blend is then finished in casks that have previously held port wine.
Located not far away from the village of Carbost, on the shore of Loch Harport, Talisker is one of the most prestigious and isolated distilleries existence. In 1825, Hugh and Kenneth Mac Askill decided to move to the Skye Island. They rented a place in Carbost and established the distillery of Talisker in 1830.
Port Ruighe (pronounced Port Ree) is Talisker?s port cask finished whisky. Named after the main town on the Isle of Skye. The port casks bring a richer edge to Talisker, bringing a sweet jammy fruitiness, milk chocolate and salted caramel which compliments the coastal peppery peat-smoke Talisker is known for.
Few whiskies tell the story of their origin better than Talisker. Double matured in port casks, this malt is a toast to the Scottish traders who braved the high seas and were instrumental in the foundation of the port wine trade.

The opinion of VIGNAPART : "This single malt bears the Gaelic name given to the island's main port: Port Ruighe. Thus, Talisker Port Ruighe pays tribute to the Scottish sailors who organised the sale of Port throughout the world but also to its double maturation in Porto casks. This whisky combines the maritime character with the sweet notes of red fruits brought by the Port barrels. This single malt, with a perfect balance, is a true blend of peat, spices and sea salts. With its generous and smooth character, this whisky will appeal particularly to lovers of single malts with a rich taste."
I found the concept of a port-finished Talisker quite intriguing. Port maturation is normally synonymous with rich, plummy, fruity flavours. I was unsure how Talisker would execute this: the concept seems a little at odds with their usual signature. So what is the result?
The Port Ruighe is different enough from the rest of the range that it will not please every Talisker fan. Equally, the lack of port punch will leave those seeking an absolute dark fruit bomb disappointed. However, it is a fitting tribute to its namesake, Portree: the town, while far from a bustling metropolis, is the main hub of Skye. It is a touch of civilisation, surrounded by stunning, wild scenery. The Port Ruighe is much the same: a touch of port richness, blended with the unmistakable character of a Talisker whisky.

The sea trade was crucial to the rise in the global popularity of Portuguese wine. In the late 18th century, the relationship between England and France was a fraught one. Colbert, first minister of Louis XIV set out to restrict the import of English goods into France. In retaliation, Charles II of England banned French wines.
Merchants with an interest in Portugal spied an opportunity. A gap was there to be filled and the full-bodied, robust wines of the Douro Valley were already proving popular with British consumers. The mountainous landscape that surrounded the valley made the transport of wine over land impossible so, instead, barrels were taken down the Douro River to the city of Oporto and from there, shipped to the British Isles, via the Atlantic Ocean.
A Portuguese brig, bound from Oporto to Sligo, laden with wine, oranges and cork, was driven by the storm of Wednesday last upon the rocks near Portreath, on the north-western coast of Cornwall. Captain Bidder, of Swansea, whose vessel was lying in the pier, pushed off in his boat with five men to the assistance of the ship-wrecked foreigners; but the violence of the surf upset his boat, when three of the brave fellows were drowned, and himself and the two others were driven on shore senseless, but happily recovered. The crew of the brig, consisting of eight men and the Captain, were all saved.
The wine shipped from Oporto became known simply as Port and found an eager market in the British Isles. It was shipped in barrels and since there was no reason to return those barrels to Portugal, other uses were found for them. In Scotland, distillers began using them to store, transport and mature their spirit. Hence, the long association between Scotch whisky and the Port wine of the Douro Valley in Portugal.

FULL DESCRIPTIONNot what we are used to seeing from the team at Talisker, the use of ruby port casks really brings out chocolaty notes, ripe red fruits and softens the peat and iodine. Not as big as the other expressions from Talisker, this seems to be them showing us a much softer side to their malt.

An early 2013 addition to Talisker's range, taking their classic Skye whisky and finishing it in ruby port casks, rounding the edges and bringing in rich, fruity sweetness. It has aromas of salted caramel, dried fruit with a hint of rose Turkish delight. Raisins, sweet caramel and floral notes on the palate, becoming smokier as time passes by. Long and smoky finish with cocoa and oak with mocha notes.
Talisker distillery was founded in 1830 by Hugh and Kenneth MacAskill, on the shores of Loch Harport, an area steeped in tradition and local custom, where Scotch Gaelic is still spoken. Talisker remained under the MacAskill's stewardship until 1898, when the Dailuaine-Talisker Distillers Company acquired it under the charge of Thomas Mackenzie. They extended the distillery in 1900, before selling the company in 1916 to a consortium including Distillers Company Limited. Following a relatively stable and calm period for Talisker, a still-house fire tragically destroyed the distillery in 1960. Thankfully, the distillery was completely rebuilt meticulously according exact copies of the old stills, and five replicas of the original stills were constructed to maintain the preservation of the original Talisker flavour. 041b061a72
